Lemvig Biogas – Renewable Energy and a Sound Economy

Since 1992 Lemvig Biogas has been the largest biogas plant in Denmark. Slurry from approx. 75 farms and waste and residual products from industrial production are used to generate heat and power. This results in a good economy both for the plant and for the households consuming the heat. In addition there are associated fringe benefits such as the degradation of pollutants and a reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases.

More than 33 million kWh electricity is generated per year from the biogas produced. This electricity is sold into the local grid. The surplus heat from the gas engine cooling system exceeds 55 million kWh per year. This heat is distributed to the users of the Lemvig central heating plant. The users number more than 3000 households. The biogas plant has been supplied by the company BWSC on a turn-key basis.

Sources of waste typically received are

- Fish waste
- Source-separated organic household waste
- Slaughterhouse waste
- Feed waste/residues
- Soft drinks, beer, alcohol
- Pharmaceutical waste products
- Bacteriologically or chemically contaminated foods
- All organic matter with a high content of fat, protein or sugar

Lemvig harbour: Ship delivering organic waste to Lemvig Biogas

Lemvig Biogas can accept shipments of organic waste ranging from 200 to 10000 tonnes at a time at either Lemvig harbour (maximum draught 4 m) or Thyborøn harbour (max. draught 8.5 m).

You are welcome to contact Lemvig Biogas at lemvigbiogas@lemvigbiogas.dk if you have any waste that can be delivered to Lemvig Biogas.

Visit Lemvig Biogas

A tour typically lasts 1½ hours and can be arranged by appointment, also in weekends. The arrangement is free, but we would like you/your company or organization to publish a link to Lemvig Biogas on your own website. The HTML code to be used is:
<a href="http://www.lemvigbiogas.com/GB.htm" target="_blank">Lemvig Biogas - renewable energy and a sound economy</a>

To book a tour please contact Lemvig Tourist Office by email turist@visitlemvig.dk or telephone +45 9782 0077.
Lemvig Tourist Office can answer queries in English, German, Spanish or French.

The tourist office can also arrange tours at other plants using environmental technology. The following renewable energy plants are all within approximately one hour’s drive from Lemvig Biogas:

  • The Danish wind turbine test site, where the world’s largest and newest turbines are erected and tested.
  • Gasification of wood in the Harboøre central heating plant’s woodchip gasifier.
  • Lemvig central heating plant, which runs on biogas and woodchips.
  • The Tvind wind turbine at Ulfborg. The turbine was indisputably the largest turbine in the world when it was built in 1978.
  • The Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy, where many of the renewable energy sources of the future are exhibited, including:
    • Wave power testing station at Nissum Bredning
    • Central heating plant that uses woodchips
    • Geothermal heating in the town of Thisted
    • Waste incineration in Thisted
    • The opportunity to visit a 40-m high wind turbine at Hanstholm (you are allowed to go up to the top)
    • Wave power at Hanstholm

Lemvig Biogas Plant would like to draw your attention to the following:

Lemvig Biogas Plant has environmental authorisation to receive waste 24 hours a day.

Lemvig Biogas Plant has been approved by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration according to the new EU regulations.

The licence number is DK-03-2-bio-001. Please note that it is illegal to send sludge and waste products for treatment at biogas plants that have not been approved by the local food administration.

Lemvig Biogas Plant has 2350 hectares of land for slurry and sludge application.

Lemvig Biogas Plant can provide full documentation that residual products of slurry/waste are legally applied to agricultural soil in Denmark. In this way our suppliers do not risk being accused of excess application of nutrients with associated environmental impacts such as eutrophication of watercourses. Documentation and statements are sent to customers on a monthly basis.

Lemvig Biogas Plant is authorised to receive untreated category III products, as the biogas plant has its own shredding and pasteurising facility.

Lemvig Biogas Plant is able to accept both liquid and solid products from all types of vehicles, such as truck-trailers (both rear and side tipping), articulated tiptrailers, tankers and slurry trucks.

Lemvig Biogas Plant can receive both liquid and solid products from ships in batches of 200 to 10,000 tonnes.

Lemvig harbour has a draft of 4.0 m.

Thyborøn harbour has a draft of 8.5 m.
