Lemvig Biogas – Renewable Energy and a Sound Economy
Since 1992 Lemvig Biogas has been the largest biogas plant in Denmark. Slurry from approx. 75 farms and waste and residual products from industrial production are used to generate heat and power. This results in a good economy both for the plant and for the households consuming the heat. In addition there are associated fringe benefits such as the degradation of pollutants and a reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases.
More than 21 million kWh electricity is generated per year from the biogas produced. This electricity is sold into the local grid.The surplus heat from the gas engine cooling system exceeds 18 million kWh per year. This heat is distributed to the users of the Lemvig central heating plant. The users number more than 1000 households. The biogas plant has been supplied by the company BWSC on a turn-key basis.
Sources of waste typically received are
- Fish waste
- Source-separated organic household waste
- Slaughterhouse waste
- Feed waste/residues
- Soft drinks, beer, alcohol
- Pharmaceutical waste products
- Bacteriologically or chemically contaminated foods
- All organic matter with a high content of fat, protein or sugar
Lemvig Biogas can accept shipments of organic waste ranging from 200 to 10000 tonnes at a time at either Lemvig harbour (maximum draught 4 m) or Thyborøn harbour (max. draught 8.5 m).

We can receive and treat the following types of waste:
- Grease sludge from sewage wells and grease traps
- Flotation sludge
- Graded organic domestic waste
- Gastrointestinal contents from slaughterhouses
- Waste from slaughterhouses. All category III types and category II types that have been sterilised at 133 degrees Celcius for 20 minutes.
- Pig blood
- Poultry – chopped – category III
- Eggs and egg waste products
- Sawdust from mink pelt processing
- Mink feed waste/residues
- Fish oil
- Fish waste
- Dairy products
- Milk containing antibiotic residues
- Concentrated whey
- Animal feed waste/residues
- Potatoes and potato pulp
- Fruit, including residues from fruit processing
- Lemon peel
- All cereal products
- Bakery waste – flour, bread and finished products
- Stick water
- Ochre-rich water/ochre from wastewater treatment
- Waste from jam production
- Ices, ice-cream, all forms of ice-cream products

Please note, that the above waste streams must not contain any food packaging unless by special arrangement with Lemvig Biogas.
Lemvig Biogas Plant would like to draw your attention to the following:
Lemvig Biogas Plant has environmental authorisation to receive waste 24 hours a day.
Lemvig Biogas Plant has been approved by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration according to the new EU regulations.
The licence number is DK-03-2-bio-001. Please note that it is illegal to send sludge and waste products for treatment at biogas plants that have not been approved by the local food administration.
Lemvig Biogas Plant has 2350 hectares of land for slurry and sludge application.
Lemvig Biogas Plant can provide full documentation that residual products of slurry/waste are legally applied to agricultural soil in Denmark. In this way our suppliers do not risk being accused of excess application of nutrients with associated environmental impacts such as eutrophication of watercourses. Documentation and statements are sent to customers on a monthly basis.
Lemvig Biogas Plant is authorised to receive untreated category III products, as the biogas plant has its own shredding and pasteurising facility.
Lemvig Biogas Plant is able to accept both liquid and solid products from all types of vehicles, such as truck-trailers (both rear and side tipping), articulated tiptrailers, tankers and slurry trucks.
Lemvig Biogas Plant can receive both liquid and solid products from ships in batches of 200 to 10,000 tonnes.
